The People's Rights

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds that have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
God exists and his laws, including his laws pertaining to the creation of nations, governments, and constitutions, are supreme, right, and absolute. God is the God of creation and He is the Creator of all things visible and invisible. God impressed his laws upon creation and he governs its operation accordingly. God gave people the power to choose as long as this choice did not infringe upon someone else’s rights or property. The Bill of Rights puts a limit on the government.
Unfortunately, nowadays people’s rights have been confused with privileges. The Declaration of Independence says that we the People not only have the right but we also have the duty to alter or abolish any government that does not secure our unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government.
Given that the U.S. was formed by settlers who threw off British government rule, there is also a historical precedent for overthrowing the government. When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.” The right to overthrow a government remains an important principle to uphold, as it serves as a check on government power. It is a reminder that governments exist to serve the people, not the other way around.

Prisoner's are People

Prisoners are People too. It seems very obvious to say, but in America, this is actually a radical idea. There is no justification for the inhumane and degrading conditions of prisons and jails, the disregard with which we speak to the accused, or the post-release disenfranchisement of convicted felons. The United States currently holds almost 2.1 million adults in prisons, the largest per capita of any country in the world. All people have the capacity for change. I emphatically believe that nobody is permanently lost or irredeemable. For those who profess to be Christians, the Bible is clear on how we are to treat prisoners. I was once labeled as prisoner #B15364. I personally know the power of being treated as one of the people. I thank the people in my home city, Aurora, Illinois for opening their arms and homes to me.
